Splendid Whale & Turtles at Lankayan Island

A Paradise for Whale Shark and Turtle Lovers
Looking to dive with the whale shark or maybe snorkel with little tiny turtles on a beautiful private island? Well, HAK’s World Travel & Tours (formerly Bike and Tours) has the perfect place for you and your family to spend those amazing moments together. This peaceful untouched paradise is not far from Sandakan town, yet secluded from the rest of the world. Lankayan Island is an ideal getaway for those seeking tranquility and relaxation in a virgin natural setting. It is a tiny palm-topped island ringed by an endless white sandy beach, located in the Sulu Sea. Many travellers consider this little gem the most beautiful island in Malaysia, with amazing dive sites including several wrecks and colourful reefs.
Diving with the Gentle Giants
Lankayan Island is renowned for its gorgeous underwater macro paradise that offers a fascinating array of diving opportunities even in a remarkably small area. Here, you have the best chance to catch a glimpse of whale sharks while diving or snorkelling. These majestic creatures, despite their name “shark” and their enormous size, are completely harmless filter feeders that dine on plankton, krill, and tiny fish.
The whale shark, the largest fish in the world, can grow as long as a school bus. When swimming with them, it’s important to respect their space — stay at least 3 metres from the head and 4 metres from the tail, avoid loud splashing, and never chase or block their path. For the best view, approach calmly from the side and swim parallel near the pectoral fins. Avoid using flash photography directly in their eyes. The best time to see these gentle giants around Lankayan Island is between March and May — perfect for divers and snorkelers seeking unforgettable encounters.
Turtle Nesting and Marine Life Encounters
Besides whale sharks, Lankayan Island is also a vital nesting site for both green and hawksbill turtles. Its beautiful hard and soft coral gardens provide essential foraging grounds for these species. Green sea turtles, among the largest in the world, have teardrop-shaped shells in shades of brown, green, or black. The smaller hawksbill turtles display oval shells in orange, brown, or yellow patterns.
From June to September, mother turtles come ashore to lay their eggs — offering visitors a rare opportunity to witness hatchlings emerging from the sand and making their way to the sea. Even casual snorkelers often spot turtles gliding gracefully underwater. A visit during this period promises both an educational and heartwarming experience for the whole family.
Staying at Lankayan Island Dive Resort
There is only one accommodation on the island — the Lankayan Island Dive Resort. This elegant retreat features 23 idyllic wooden chalets with private balconies overlooking the turquoise ocean, offering a perfect romantic atmosphere for honeymooners. As availability is limited, it’s advisable to book with HAK’s World Travel & Tours at least 6 months in advance, especially during the peak season (June–August).
