Timpohon → Laban Rata: +1,406m (6.0 km, 23% incline, 5–7 hrs)
Laban Rata → Summit: +823m (3.0 km, 27% incline, 3–4 hrs)

Itinerary

Day 1 – Kota Kinabalu to Kinabalu Park (D)

  • 12:00 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu (flights ideally before noon).
  • Pickup from airport/hotel, short stop in KK for lunch/shopping (own expenses).
  • 14:00 – 2-hour overland transfer via Crocker Range to Kinabalu Park.
  • 16:00 – Check in at Park accommodation (1,564m).
  • 19:00 – Dinner at Balsam Restaurant. Overnight at Kinabalu Park.

Day 2 – Timpohon Gate to Laban Rata (B/L/D)

  • 06:30 – Wake up, warm-up, prepare for climb.
  • 07:00 – Breakfast & collect packed lunch.
  • 07:30 – Organize luggage: store at PHQ (RM 13/item) or porter service (RM 13/kg round trip).
  • 08:30 – Shuttle to Timpohon Gate (1,866m).
  • 09:30 – Begin 6 km hike through montane forest to Laban Rata (3,273m).
  • 17:00–19:00 – Dinner at Laban Rata. Overnight in shared dormitory.

Day 3 – Summit & Return to Kota Kinabalu (B/L)

  • 01:30 – Wake up, light supper, prepare for summit push.
  • 02:00 – Start 2.72 km climb on granite slopes to Low’s Peak (4,095m).
  • 05:00 – Cut-off at Sayat Sayat checkpoint (3,685m). Continue if on time.
  • Sunrise at the summit, ~30 minutes for photos.
  • 07:30 – Descend 2–3 hrs back to Laban Rata. Breakfast & pack.
  • 10:30 – Check-out. Descend 6 km to Timpohon Gate (4–5 hrs).
  • Lunch at Balsam Café, collect certificate.
  • 16:30 – 2-hour transfer back to Kota Kinabalu. Drop off at hotel.

Important: Do not book flights on the same day as descent. Stay 1 night in Kota Kinabalu before departure.

Things to Know

  • Permits are limited to ~130 climbers/day – book 6 months in advance.
  • Children under 16 require an extra private guide (RM 230/guide, max. 2 children).
  • Summit trail is ~700m longer since 2015 earthquake.
  • Summit attempts may be cancelled by rangers in bad weather for safety.
  • Summit temperatures can drop to –3°C with wind chill.

  • Lightweight clothing (dry-fit shirt, trekking pants)

  • Waterproof backpack (max 7kg)

Laban Rata → Summit

  • Warm layers (shirt, fleece, windbreaker)
  • Trek pants, thick socks, sturdy shoes
  • Balaclava/hat & waterproof gloves
  • Headlamp (essential for pre-dawn climb)
  • 0.5L water & energy snacks
  • Camera – leave heavy gear at the hut
