Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort – Abai, Sabah
Escape into Sabah’s Hidden Wildlife Haven
Located in Abai, the Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort (KWR) is a secluded gem along Sabah’s most famous wildlife river. Nestled in pristine mangrove and freshwater forest, it offers a peaceful escape far from the busier Sukau stretch of the Kinabatangan. With charming chalets, warm hospitality, and direct access to one of Borneo’s richest ecosystems, it is the perfect base for wildlife enthusiasts, birders, and nature lovers.
We first discovered the Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort in 2016 – and it felt like finding a hidden treasure. Tucked away from the crowds, this eco-lodge allows close encounters with proboscis monkeys, orangutans, pygmy elephants, and rare bird species in a tranquil mangrove setting. Guests can look forward to immersive experiences such as guided river cruises, night walks along the boardwalks, birdwatching, and encounters with the Orang Sungai community.
A stay at KWR combines authentic adventure with the comfort of a secluded eco-lodge — making it our favourite way to experience the Kinabatangan River.
