Imbak Canyon Sabah – Jungle Treks & Wildlife Adventure

Remote, pristine and wild – Imbak Canyon is Sabah’s hidden rainforest valley linking Danum Valley and Maliau Basin.

The Imbak Canyon Conservation Area, located north of Maliau Basin, covers around 300 km² and forms a vital corridor between two of Sabah’s most famous protected areas: Danum Valley and Maliau Basin. About 300 km southeast of Kota Kinabalu, the canyon lies within Yayasan Sabah’s concession area. Its unique 25 km long mountain-bounded valley is even visible from the air.

Conservation

In 2009, Imbak Canyon was designated a 1st Class Protection Forest Reserve, ending all logging and extractive activities. It is one of Malaysia’s last truly untouched conservation areas. The ancient rainforest harbours over 600 plant species, including 196 orchids and 26 ferns. Wildlife records include 245 bird species, 22 freshwater fish and 19 carnivore species. Mammals such as pygmy elephants, sun bears, orangutans, sambar deer, leopards and mouse deer are among the highlights.

Visitor Experience

Nature lovers ready to take on rugged treks into the jungle will be rewarded with impressive waterfalls and virgin rainforest. Activities include jungle trekking, birdwatching, outdoor photography, camping and night walks to observe nocturnal wildlife. Imbak Canyon is remote and visits require prior arrangement with the proper authorities, making each journey here an exclusive adventure.
