Rainforest Discovery Centre – Sepilok
Rainforest Discovery Centre (Sepilok, Sabah)
Walk above the rainforest canopy at one of Sabah’s most accessible nature attractions, perfect for families, birdwatchers and nature lovers.
The Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), located just 23 km from Sandakan at the edge of the Sepilok-Kabili Forest Reserve, is managed by the Sabah Forestry Department. Opened in 2006, it combines environmental education with adventure across 4,300 hectares of pristine lowland rainforest. Visitors can enjoy jungle trails, orchid gardens and one of the best canopy walkways in Borneo.
Visitor Centre & Exhibits
The main visitor building introduces Sabah’s biodiversity through engaging displays. Exhibits include insects, butterflies, native plants, rare tropical bird photographs and striking wildlife replicas, such as a 15-foot crocodile. Plant lovers will enjoy the Orchid and Plant Discovery displays.
Orchid & Plant Discovery Garden
The three-acre garden features around 250 species of native orchids, pitcher plants, aquatic plants, economic crops and tropical ornamentals. Highlights include observing insect-catching pitcher plants up close and admiring rare orchids found only in Borneo.
Jungle Trails & Ancient Giants
Marked rainforest trails lead past towering trees such as the Sepilok Giant, a Yellow Seraya over 1,000 years old, and the Mengaris, one of Borneo’s tallest trees. Informative panels along the way explain the forest’s flora and fauna, with chances to spot wildlife in their natural habitat.
Birdwatching & Canopy Walkway
The highlight of the RDC is the 347-metre-long canopy walkway, rising 25 metres above the forest with observation towers named Bristlehead and Trogon. Over 300 bird species can be seen here, including hornbills, kingfishers, pittas and the rare Bornean Bristlehead. The walkway is sturdy, family-friendly and a favourite with birders and photographers worldwide.
Events & Activities
Each year, the Borneo Bird Festival attracts enthusiasts from around the globe. With its canopy walkway, orchid gardens and educational trails, the Rainforest Discovery Centre is the ideal destination for families, students and travellers seeking to experience Sabah’s rainforest biodiversity.
