Red Ape Trail – Batang Ai Orangutan Trek

Duration: 5 Days / 4 Nights

The Red Ape Trail is a 5-day rainforest journey into Batang Ai, combining daily treks with the chance to encounter orangutans and other wildlife. Treks take place along the upper Delok River, in forested hills bordering Batang Ai National Park. Early morning and late afternoon walks offer the best opportunities to spot orangutans and their nests. Surveys in 2013 estimated up to 200 orangutans living in these forests outside the protected park boundaries. This adventure uses traditional Iban trails and is guided with their knowledge of the land.

Day 1 – Kuching to Nanga Sumpa (L/D)

  • Morning: Pick-up at 08:00 hrs from your Kuching hotel. Drive to Batang Ai Reservoir with a stop at Lachau Bazaar to explore local shops and enjoy an early lunch in a coffee shop.
  • Afternoon: Arrive at Batang Ai Lake around 13:30–14:00 hrs. Board a longboat and travel upriver to Nanga Sumpa, arriving about 15:30 hrs (depending on river conditions). Check in at the lodge.
  • Evening: Dinner followed by a visit to the Nanga Sumpa longhouse. Meet the Iban community, relax on the ruai (communal verandah), and taste traditional rice wine. Overnight at Nanga Sumpa Lodge.

Day 2 – Sepulau & Orangutan Trekking (B/L/D)

  • Morning: Depart Nanga Sumpa at 07:30–08:00 hrs for a trek through the rainforest around Sepulau. Look out for orangutans, nests, pig-tailed macaques, hornbills, and forest birds. Return to the lodge by midday for lunch.
  • Afternoon: Free time to swim in the river, relax, or visit the longhouse. Around 15:30–16:00 hrs, set off on a guided jungle walk near Nanga Sumpa to continue the search for orangutans and their nests.
  • Evening: Dinner and overnight at Nanga Sumpa Lodge.

Day 3 – Orangutan Trek & Enseluai Waterfall – Lubok Kasai (B/L/D)

  • Early Morning: Wake at 06:00 hrs for coffee before departing on a dawn trek behind Nanga Sumpa, following trails through orangutan habitat (approx. 2 hrs). Return to the lodge for breakfast.
  • Late Morning: Continue trekking along riverside jungle trails until 11:30 hrs, when you are picked up by longboat and travel upriver to Enseluai Waterfall. Swim, relax, and enjoy a BBQ lunch prepared by Iban hosts.
  • Afternoon: Continue by longboat to the junction of the Delok and Lalang Rivers. Trek 1–2 hrs through orangutan territory to reach Lubok Kasai jungle camp, located by the Lalang River. Swim in the river or relax in the camp surroundings.
  • Evening: Dinner at the camp, followed by either a quiet night in the forest or an optional short night walk (weather permitting). Overnight at Lubok Kasai Jungle Camp.

Day 4 – Lubok Kasai Trekking (B/L/D)

  • Morning: After breakfast, set out on another trek with your guide in search of orangutans. Trails will be chosen depending on the previous day’s sightings of nests or wildlife activity.
  • Afternoon: Return for lunch at Lubok Kasai. Relax at leisure before heading out again around 16:00 hrs for a late afternoon trek near the camp.
  • Evening: Dinner and overnight at Lubok Kasai Jungle Camp.

Day 5 – Lubok Kasai to Kuching (B/L)

  • Morning: Breakfast at the camp before departing at 08:30 hrs. Travel by longboat downstream to Batang Ai Lake jetty (arriving around 10:30–11:00 hrs).
  • Afternoon: Overland return to Kuching with a stop for lunch along the way. Arrival expected around 16:30 hrs, with transfer to your hotel.

Travel Tip: Bring only a small overnight bag, as longboats have limited luggage space. Large suitcases can usually be stored at your hotel in Kuching during the trip.
