Mulu National Park – Caves and Rainforest Wonders

Nestled deep in Sarawak’s interior, Gunung Mulu National Park is one of Borneo’s most spectacular natural treasures. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is world-renowned for its extraordinary cave systems, underground rivers and dramatic limestone pinnacles. Visitors can trek through pristine rainforest, marvel at vast caverns such as Deer Cave, and witness the unforgettable evening exodus of millions of bats. Mulu is a paradise for adventurers, cavers and nature lovers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime Borneo experience.

Gunung Mulu – A UNESCO World Heritage

Covering 544 sq km, Mulu is Sarawak’s largest national park and Malaysia’s first World Heritage Area (since 2000). It is most famous for its limestone cave systems, including:

  • Sarawak Chamber – the world’s largest natural underground chamber
  • Deer Cave – the world’s largest cave passage
  • Clearwater Cave – Southeast Asia’s longest cave system

The park’s four main show caves – Wind, Clearwater, Deer and Lang’s – are accessible via wooden walkways and trails. Other highlights include a bat observatory, the 480-metre Canopy Skywalk (the world’s longest tree-based walkway), challenging adventure caving, the Mulu Summit climb, the spectacular Pinnacles Trail and the historic Headhunter’s Trail.

Mountains & Forest Ecosystems

Three mountains dominate the park: Gunung Mulu (2,376m), Gunung Api (1,750m) and Gunung Benarat (1,585m). While Gunung Mulu is sandstone, Api and Benarat are limestone, creating contrasting landscapes – from moss forests on Mulu’s summit to razor-sharp limestone pinnacles up to 50 metres tall on Gunung Api.

The park protects diverse ecosystems: peat swamp, heath forest, dipterocarp forest, moss forest and montane vegetation. It is home to thousands of species, including 170 orchids, 10 pitcher plants, 8 hornbill species, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and countless insects and butterflies.

Wildlife Encounters

Although often heard rather than seen, visitors may encounter bats, swiftlets, cave-dwelling insects, snakes, lizards, tree frogs and colourful butterflies. The daily bat exodus from Deer Cave is one of Borneo’s most iconic wildlife spectacles.

Visiting Mulu National Park

Access to caves and the Canopy Skywalk is only permitted with a licensed Park Guide. For longer treks such as the Pinnacles or Summit climb, advance booking is essential – especially in peak season when guides may be fully booked weeks ahead. Bookings and fees can be arranged at the park office.
