Surreal Wildlife Kinabatangan River Cruise

Written by Aleena Che Ramli

Experience the Wonders of Kinabatangan

Experience endless amazing discoveries in one of the most biodiverse forest and river systems on Earth. The Kinabatangan River Cruise is possibly the most rewarding nature expedition one should not miss. Take the opportunity to explore the mystical Kinabatangan River by boat and be ready to be amazed by Borneo’s natural beauty and rare wildlife.

Geographically, the Kinabatangan River is known as the longest river in Sabah and the second longest in Malaysia. This unique river emerges high from the Crocker Range and travels 560 km down to its mangrove swamp estuary, and finally into the Sulu Sea on the East coast of Sabah.

The Beating Heart of Borneo’s Wildlife

The Kinabatangan River’s rich ecosystem has had a remarkable impact on the concentration of Borneo wildlife in the lower reaches of the river. According to experts, it is renowned for being one of the most diverse and easily accessible wildlife regions in Southeast Asia.

When Sir David Attenborough first visited the Kinabatangan in 1972, he was so impressed that he wrote: “Life on Earth is not evenly spread around our planet. Borneo – the world’s third largest island – is one of its richest treasure houses, full of immense variety of wild animals and plants, all living in a magnificent tropical forest.”

Preserving a Fragile Ecosystem

It must be noted that the Kinabatangan River is also one of Earth’s most fragile and threatened ecological sites. Today, Sukau is frequently visited by travelers and naturalists from across the globe. While many come to experience the wildlife river safari, few are aware that Sukau once faced deforestation at an alarming rate.

To preserve the rainforest, the government initiated replanting programs — planting fruit and flower trees to provide food and shelter for wildlife. As a result, these trees have become the foundation of a secondary forest that now welcomes animals back to their natural habitat. Only the areas immediately alongside the river are protected, as much of the surrounding land was converted into palm-oil plantations.

While most of the wildlife survived, they are now largely restricted to narrow strips of forest along the river. This is one of the reasons why travelers are more likely to encounter wildlife during river cruises than when trekking through the dense primary forests of Danum Valley, Sungai Kapur, or Tabin.

What to Expect on the River

Cruising along the Kinabatangan River remains one of the best ways to spot wildlife in their current natural habitat. It’s a paradise for photographers and nature lovers eager to capture scenic Bornean landscapes, wildlife, and birds. Every journey here brings a story worth sharing.

On a regular day, you may spot numerous bird species and endemic primates such as kingfishers, hornbills, proboscis monkeys, macaques, maroon langurs, and Bornean gibbons. Other encounters might include snakes, frogs, and stick insects — and on warm days, crocodiles basking by the riverbank. Be cautious: that “log” floating on the surface might not be what it seems!

If you’re lucky, you may even glimpse a herd of adorable pygmy elephants bathing or a wild orangutan peeking from its nest near the water’s edge.
