Mount Kinabalu – Malaysia’s Highest Peak & UNESCO World Heritage
Mount Kinabalu – Malaysia’s Highest Peak
Mount Kinabalu – Malaysia’s Highest Peak
Mount Kinabalu, rising 4,095 metres above sea level in Borneo’s Crocker Range, is the highest mountain in Malaysia and the entire Malay Archipelago. This majestic peak draws both locals and international travellers who wish to experience its natural beauty and climb to its summit. Protected as Kinabalu Park, the area was designated as Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 2000 for its outstanding universal value and global significance as one of the world’s most important biological hotspots.
Kinabalu Park shelters an extraordinary diversity of life: between 5,000–6,000 plant species, 326 bird species and over 100 mammals. Visitors may encounter the giant Rafflesia flower, carnivorous Nepenthes pitcher plants, and animals such as orangutans, Malayan weasels, leopard cats and deer.
Climbing Mount Kinabalu
Climbers must follow park regulations and be accompanied by licensed guides at all times. Permits are limited to about 130 climbers per day, tied to the number of beds available in the mountain huts. Because demand is high, it is strongly recommended to book at least six months in advance.
Trails to the Summit
After the earthquake of 5 June 2015, Sabah Parks introduced a new summit route. The Kota Belud Trail (2.8 km from Laban Rata) opened in December 2016, incorporating parts of ancient paths but diverting around rockfall areas for safety. The original trail, first documented by Sir Hugh Low in 1851, is still partly in use. Both routes meet at the Sayat-Sayat Checkpoint before the final ascent to Low’s Peak.
Via Ferrata Adventure
For those seeking extra adventure, Mount Kinabalu also offers the world’s highest via ferrata – a protected climbing route with steel cables, rungs and ladders managed by Mountain Torq. This alpine-style experience provides a thrilling alternative ascent and stunning views across the Crocker Range.
