Be prepared for some of the most impressive views of the Malaysian rainforest. A Maliau Basin expedition is truly an experience of a lifetime.
Maliau Basin: A Lost World Undisturbed by Time
Known as Sabah's “Lost World”, Maliau Basin is home to one of the richest collections of flora and fauna on earth. This awe-inspiring biological wonderland is ideal for adventurous travellers who are reasonably fit and do not mind being away from city comforts.
The basin itself is a huge single water catchment, drained only by one river – the Maliau River, which passes through a gorge in the southeast of the Basin before joining the Kuamut River and eventually the Kinabatangan River, Sabah’s most important waterway.
A Global Hotspot for Wildlife Biodiversity
Though much of the area remains to be explored, Maliau Basin has already revealed itself as the refuge of Sabah's most rare and endangered wildlife. These include the Clouded leopard and the Bornean pygmy elephant. Bird enthusiasts will be thrilled: nearly 300 bird species have been recorded, including the elusive Bornean Bristlehead and the spectacular Bulwer's pheasant.
So far, researchers have identified more than 30 species of amphibians here, along with newly discovered species of crab, fish, and water beetle. Many more species are undoubtedly waiting to be found in this untouched wilderness.
Outstanding Natural Features and Landscapes
Maliau Basin boasts some of the most remarkable natural features and landscapes in Malaysia, including the highest concentration of waterfalls in the country. The most famous is the breathtaking Maliau Falls, a seven-tiered cascade plunging 20 meters.
The Basin is also home to Sabah’s only freshwater lake, the mystical Lake Linumunsut. Local Murut legends tell of a dragon holding back the lake’s water with its tail. Nestled below the northern escarpment, Lake Linumunsut remains one of the most enchanting and photogenic spots in the region.
