Go deeper into Sabah’s Lost World – this 5-day trek through Maliau Basin takes you to Nepenthes Camp, Ginseng Camp and the iconic Maliau Falls, with nights in the rainforest and days full of discovery.

Itinerary Maliau Basin (5D4N)

Day 1 – Kota Kinabalu to Maliau Basin Study Centre (L/D)

  • 7:00 am – Pick up from hotel in Kota Kinabalu and drive via Keningau (packed breakfast recommended).
  • 11:00 am – Arrive at Shell Maliau Basin Reception & Information Building (Maliau Security Gate).
  • Continue 1 hour by 4x4 to Maliau Basin Study Centre (MBSC), register and enjoy lunch.
  • Afternoon – Introductory walk around the centre to learn about the area’s biodiversity.
  • 7:00 pm – Dinner followed by optional night drive to spot nocturnal wildlife (weather permitting).

Day 2 – Trek to Nepenthes Camp (B/L/D)

  • 7:00 am – Breakfast, then 8:00 am depart by 4x4 to Agathis Camp.
  • Begin 7.5 km trek to Nepenthes Camp (about 5 hours) with lunch en route.
  • Arrive and settle in, then climb the 33-metre observation platform for panoramic views.
  • Optional afternoon trek (3–3.5 km each way) to Giluk and Takob Akob Falls for a refreshing dip.
  • 7:00 pm – Dinner and overnight at Nepenthes Camp.

Day 3 – Trek to Ginseng Camp (B/L/D)

  • Early breakfast, then 7 km trek (about 5 hours) through lowland dipterocarp, montane and heath forests.
  • Encounter unique flora such as pitcher plants and fan palms along the way.
  • Lunch along the trail or upon arrival at Ginseng Camp.
  • Optional short walk (15 minutes) to Ginseng Falls.
  • Dinner and overnight at Ginseng Camp.

Day 4 – Maliau Falls (B/L/D)

  • 8:00 am – Depart on 4.8 km trek (2–3 hours) to the spectacular Maliau Falls.
  • Spend the day swimming, relaxing and enjoying lunch at Sabah’s most iconic waterfall.
  • 2:00 pm – Return trek to Ginseng Camp.
  • Dinner and overnight at Ginseng Camp.

Day 5 – Return to Kota Kinabalu (B/L)

  • 7:00 am – Breakfast, then trek 9 km (about 6 hours) back to Agathis Camp with packed lunch.
  • 1:00–2:00 pm – Arrive at Agathis Camp, transfer by 4x4 to MBSC.
  • Continue drive to Kota Kinabalu, arriving around 8:00 pm.
