Kinabatangan River – Sabah’s Wildlife Corridor
Where Sabah’s Wildlife Comes to Life
The Kinabatangan River, stretching 560 km from the mountains of southwest Sabah to the Sulu Sea, is Malaysia’s second-longest river and one of the richest ecosystems in Southeast Asia. Its lower basin forms the country’s largest forest-covered floodplain, recognized as a Ramsar Site, and is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife – from proboscis monkeys, orangutans and pygmy elephants to crocodiles and hundreds of bird species.
Exploring the Kinabatangan by river cruise is the best way to experience its wildlife. Each cruise offers something different:
- Morning cruises focus on birdlife, including hornbills and kingfishers.
- Afternoon cruises bring sightings of proboscis monkeys, gibbons, crocodiles and elephants.
- Night cruises reveal nocturnal species such as tarsiers, owls, flying squirrels and sleeping kingfishers.
The river is also home to the Orang Sungai (“People of the River”), the largest indigenous group in the area. Traditionally fishermen and farmers, some now welcome visitors through locally run homestays, sharing their culture and connection to the river.
Depending on your style of travel, we can arrange stays ranging from the luxurious Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort in Abai, to budget-friendly guesthouses and family-run homestays in Sukau. For those seeking alternatives off the main trail, nearby Sungai Kapur and Bukit Piton also offer rewarding nature and wildlife experiences.
