Semporna & Sipadan – Sabah’s Island Paradise
Semporna – Gateway to Sabah’s Island Paradise
Semporna, a small town on the east coast of Sabah, is the main gateway to some of Borneo’s most beautiful islands. The town itself is compact and easy to explore by foot or taxi. A short drive outside town brings you to Skull Hill (Bukit Tengkorak), a steep but rewarding climb with wooden staircases and viewing platforms overlooking the coast. At its base lies a small museum with archaeological remains.
Semporna also hosts cultural highlights such as the Regatta Lepa, a traditional boat festival held every April, celebrating the seafaring heritage of the Bajau Laut people.
Just offshore lies the Tun Sakaran Marine Park (Islands Park), gazetted in 2004, protecting a unique marine ecosystem. From here, Semporna offers access to world-renowned dive sites and tropical island escapes:
-
Sipadan Island – a diver’s paradise, famous for its abundant marine life.
-
Mabul Island – budget-friendly and popular with backpackers, known for its macro marine species.
-
Mataking & Pom Pom Islands – more exclusive options with white sandy beaches, aquamarine waters, and privacy for those seeking a luxury escape.
Whether you are a diver, culture enthusiast, or simply looking for postcard-perfect beaches, Semporna is the starting point for your island adventure in Sabah.
