Discover the World’s Oldest Rainforest
Danum Valley is a showcase of immaculate rainforest, stretching across 438 square kilometers. Unlike many other regions in Borneo, there were never any human settlements here. That means no history of logging, hunting, or agriculture – the valley remained untouched because it was simply too remote and inaccessible.
Scientists estimate that Danum Valley is part of a 130-million-year-old rainforest, making it one of the oldest on the planet. Because of its exceptional ecological value, there have been repeated proposals to nominate the valley as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A Dream for Naturalists and Photographers
Danum Valley is a dream destination for naturalists, researchers, birders, environmentalists, and photographers. Entry is strictly regulated to keep the area protected, ensuring that it does not become a site for mass tourism.
Visitors can enjoy a range of activities including:
- Jungle trekking through pristine rainforest
- Birdwatching for rare and endemic species
- River swimming in crystal-clear jungle streams
- Night walks and drives to spot nocturnal wildlife
Danum Valley: Home to Exceptional Flora and Fauna
Danum Valley is recognized as one of the most important conservation areas on earth. Bird diversity alone is outstanding, with over 300 recorded species, including:
- Seven species of pittas
- All eight species of hornbills
- The rare and unique Bornean Bristlehead
The valley is also home to 120 mammal species, such as:
- Ten species of primates
- The Bornean pygmy elephant
- The clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa)
- The long-tailed macaque
Reptiles and amphibians are equally fascinating – from soft-shelled turtles and vipers to the extraordinary Wallace’s flying frog.
On the botanical side, more than 15,000 plant species thrive here, about one-third of which are endemic (found nowhere else). The lowlands are dominated by towering dipterocarp trees – the giants of Borneo’s rainforests. Advanced laser scanning revealed 50 trees exceeding 90 meters in height, with the tallest reaching 94.1 meters and a crown spanning more than 40 meters.
Danum Valley is not just a destination – it is a living treasure of global biodiversity.
