Nestled in lush green surroundings with rolling hills as a backdrop, Sepilok Forest Edge Resort blends comfort, tradition, and nature. Its stylish Malay-design chalets and longhouse accommodation provide the perfect retreat just minutes away from the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.

Chalets

Each chalet is thoughtfully built using recycled wood panels sourced from traditional Chinese houses dating back to the 1940s — many of which you’ll still see on your way to Sepilok. Depending on the unit type, rooms feature minimalist local designs with both indoor and outdoor showers, reconnecting you with life’s natural simplicity.

Guests are welcomed by traditional Malay doors secured with handcrafted wooden locks, leading into rooms softly illuminated by Bubuh lights and lanterns inspired by Malay and Chinese culture. Each space is decorated with local artwork, handmade natural pieces, and nostalgic images of old Sandakan.

The rustic bathrooms combine polished cement, bamboo walls, and running tap water that flows through bamboo pipes. Selected chalet types offer open-air showers or bathtubs with a waterfall feature — and by opening the original WWII-era iron-cast windows reclaimed from old village houses, you can experience an authentic touch of the past.

Labuk B&B – The Longhouse

Designed for the budget traveller and backpacker, the Longhouse offers a communal yet comfortable experience inspired by traditional Bornean living. Rooms are divided into female, male, and mixed dormitories with well-equipped bunk beds. Each bed includes a personal reading light, power socket, and locker for secure storage.

Nature is quite literally at your doorstep — the resort is second only to the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) in terms of birding and wildlife opportunities. Broadbills, kingfishers, pittas, and other rainforest species are frequent visitors, and even orangutans occasionally stop by the fruit trees. This rich biodiversity is the result of minimal disturbance during development, making it a true haven for nature enthusiasts.
