Sungai Kapur "North Tabin"

Where jungle and river meet the sea – Sungai Kapur is Sabah’s hidden frontier of pristine rainforest, mangroves and wildlife encounters.

Referring to Sungai Kapur as an “off the beaten path gem” is an understatement. Nestled within a RAMSAR site, this unique area is often described as Lahad Datu’s “2-in-1”: imagine the dense jungle of Danum Valley merging with the wildlife-rich rivers of Kinabatangan – all in one place.

Back in 2017, during our first recce tour, we were among the early visitors to explore Sungai Kapur. The raw beauty of its mangroves, rainforest and wildlife encounters left us deeply impressed. Those early days were truly adventurous – collecting rainwater after elephants destroyed the tanks, adapting to jungle life, and realising what a treasure this landscape was.

Today, Sungai Kapur can be experienced in far greater comfort thanks to the Utan Rainforest Lodge, built within the Virgin Jungle Reserve. What has remained unchanged is the sense of discovery:

• River cruises through untouched mangrove and Nipah forests with macaques, proboscis monkeys, crocodiles and hornbills.
• Jungle treks under towering hardwood trees, crossing streams and muddy trails, looking out for giant Kapur trees.
• Night safaris with the chance to spot civets, leopard cats, owls or slow lorises.
• Sunsets, starlit skies and firefly shows that illuminate the riverbanks in magical natural light.

Sungai Kapur remains a place for adventurers and nature lovers – raw, rare and rewarding. What started as a pioneering journey in 2017 has grown into a sustainable experience that continues to inspire.
