4D3N Mulu Pinnacles Trek & Show Caves
Duration: 4 Days / 3 Nights
The Mulu Pinnacles are a dramatic formation of 50-metre-high limestone spikes rising from the jungle slopes of Mount Api. This challenging trek rewards hikers with breathtaking views over the razor-sharp pinnacles and a true sense of achievement. Alongside the climb, this 4D3N package also includes visits to Mulu’s famous show caves, offering the perfect combination of adventure and discovery.
Day 1 – Arrival & Deer and Lang’s Caves
- Morning: Pick-up at Mulu Airport and transfer to Gunung Mulu National Park. Check in at your accommodation. Free time to explore the Park HQ and Interpretation Centre (lunch on own account).
- Afternoon: At 14:15 hrs, depart on a 3 km plankwalk through primary rainforest to Deer Cave, the world’s largest cave passage, with its moon-like interior and the famous “Abraham Lincoln” profile. Continue to Lang’s Cave, admired for its intricate stalactites and stalagmites.
- Evening: Watch millions of bats spiral out of Deer Cave in their nightly exodus from the Bat Observatory. Return to Park HQ by torchlight and overnight in Mulu.
Accommodation: Longhouse Room at Park HQ (twin sharing)
Day 2 – Wind & Clearwater Caves, Trek to Camp 5 (B/L/D)
- Morning: Depart 08:45 hrs by longboat upriver to Wind Cave and its King’s Chamber. Continue to Clearwater Cave via plankwalk and 250 steps. Discover unique flora, such as the endemic one-leaf plant and light-sensitive algae. Picnic or packed lunch by the riverside swimming area beneath towering rainforest trees.
- Afternoon: After lunch, continue by boat to Long Litut (approx. 1 hr). From here, trek 3 hrs through mixed dipterocarp and riverside forest to reach Camp 5. Located beside the Melinau River, Camp 5 offers a cool place to swim and relax after the trek.
- Evening: Dinner and overnight at Camp 5 (basic dormitory with shared facilities).
Day 3 – Gunung Api & The Pinnacles (B/L/D)
- Morning: After breakfast, begin the challenging climb up Gunung Api. The trail is only 2.4 km but rises 1,200 m, with rope sections and ladders to assist on the steep terrain.
- Midday: Reach the Pinnacles Viewpoint after 4–5 hrs of ascent. Enjoy packed lunch and marvel at the jagged limestone spires rising dramatically from the jungle canopy.
- Afternoon: Descend back to Camp 5, taking care on the steep and slippery trail. Dinner and overnight at Camp 5.
Day 4 – Camp 5 to Park HQ & Departure (B/L)
- Morning: Breakfast at Camp 5. Trek back 3 hrs to Long Litut, then return by longboat downstream to Park HQ.
- Afternoon: Lunch at the park before transfer to Mulu Airport for your onward flight.
Travel Tip: The Pinnacles trek is steep and demanding. A good level of fitness, proper footwear, and stamina are essential. The descent is often tougher than the climb – take your time and stay hydrated.
