Remote, untouched and dramatic – Maliau Basin is Sabah’s Lost World, a vast rainforest basin sealed off by cliffs and rich in rare wildlife and plants.
The Maliau Basin Conservation Area, known as “Sabah’s Lost World,” offers an authentic and almost untouched tropical rainforest experience. In the Murut language, Maliau means “Land of Giant Staircase.” Its almost circular rim of steep slopes and cliffs forms a natural barricade, creating a self-contained ecosystem isolated for centuries. Covering 58,840 hectares and reaching elevations over 1,675 m, the basin remains one of Malaysia’s finest wilderness areas, with much still unexplored.
Conservation
Once threatened by logging, the Sabah State Government upgraded the basin in 1997 to Class I Protection Forest Reserve. This gave it full legal protection as a conservation area. Today, it preserves diverse ecosystems including lowland dipterocarp forest, montane heath forest, and rare flora such as eight pitcher plant species, orchids, and the striking Rafflesia tengku-adlinii, first discovered here in 1988.
Wildlife
The basin is home to remarkable biodiversity: over 290 bird species, including the Bornean Bristlehead, Blue-headed Pitta, Black-headed Pitta, Banded Pitta, Peregrine Falcon and Bulwer’s Pheasant, as well as more than 80 mammal species. Large mammals like clouded leopards, sun bears, banteng, pygmy elephants and barking deer have been recorded here. As in any dense rainforest, sightings depend on patience, timing and luck.
Visitor Experience
Maliau Basin is remote, less explored and far from civilisation. Trekking here means venturing into lush, multi-layered jungle, encountering waterfalls, vines and thick canopies. Wildlife spotting can be challenging, but the reward is immersion in one of Borneo’s last great wilderness areas. It is a destination for adventurers, nature lovers and those seeking an authentic rainforest experience – not for the faint-hearted or seekers of comfort.
